Thanks to Tim Cumming and Songlines for a great 4-star review of my upcoming solo album! See below for the review (transcription below image), or get hold of the full issue of this month’s magazine here.
George Sansome George Sansome Grimdon Records (44 mins) * * * * Granny’s Attic guitarist and singer steps out on his own
One third of BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominees Granny’s Attic, Sansome releases his solo debut. This self-titled album is a set of traditional songs produced by Ben Walker and beautifully performed by Sansome.
The songs are captured up-close and personal — Sansome’s high level of performance means that as a listener you can all but climb inside them and roam around, taking on their weights and measures. It opens with ‘Collier Lass’, a vivid depiction of hard labour and hardier spirit; its lines ‘for we would provide you with life’s greatest blessing/so do not despise a poor collier lass’ will find a strong echo in the hailing of frontline workers in the current pandemic. ‘The Bold Princess Royal’ is a classic seafaring adventure, our bold heroes fighting off French privateers in a big, popular song handled by everyone from Walter Pardon to Bob Copper.
Other choices are less familiar, but no less absorbing, such as the seduction song ‘Gown Of Green’, wherein a lone mother with babe in arms is reunited with her wounded soldier lover, or ‘The Bleaches So Green’, a more gimlet-eyed take on love, marriage and seduction. As with many a classic folk ballad, all of life — good, bad, and outrageous — can be found herein.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the charity livestream requests gig on Wednesday 10th June, and an especially big thank you to those people who generously donated via the link. Your contributions came to an amazing £410!
Thanks to your generosity I was able to send a £205 donation to Naz and Matt Foundation, and a £205 donation to African Rainbow Family. These are both brilliant charities, and this money will help them continue the vital work they are doing.
You can catch up on the livestream here, and if you’d like to donate you can do so via the charities’ websites (above), or via my PayPal payment link (please write “Charity Donation” in the message box).
The gig was really fun – a special thank you to people who requested songs! I was joined at various points individually by Edie and Lucy from Blue Nudes, who are just as great together as they are individually. Here’s their Bandcamp.
Next gig is the virtual album launch (via Facebook) on Friday 26th June, which will feature some more special guests!
The good people at Bandcamp have been waiving their fees on the first Friday of the past few months, to support artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. This month, they’ve done the same again!
So today (05/06/2020), I’ve released a special limited edition print (pictured) of some beautiful artwork by Mars West. Mars created the artwork for my new album, and this print is based on that artwork. It’s a 5×7″ Giclée print on high-grade 308gsm Hahnemühle Photorag paper, and is available at a special reduced price (for today only) on my Bandcamp page.
Bandcamp Friday is also a great opportunity to discover new music and support artists who you haven’t heard before, so here’s a list of some folk artists that I’ve been really enjoying recently. If you like listening to music before you buy it but don’t have time to stream the full album, then I’ve also listed a track from each album that I particularly loved.
There’s a mix of sub-genres and instrumental/vocal music – so hopefully you’ll find something you enjoy!

Bold Fisherman, the single from my upcoming album, is now available to download/stream from all the usual places (Spotify, Apple Music etc). I’ve also made it free to download from my bandcamp – hope you enjoy! Feel free to share the track with family and friends.
The video for the song has been premiered by the lovely people on Folk Radio so head over there to watch it! Here’s what they had to say about it:
“There’s a lot to be said for Sansome’s uncluttered approach, he has the vocals and guitar skills to stand alone, as he demonstrates so ably here” Folk Radio UK
Tonight (24th April) I’ll be doing a livestream single launch gig on my Facebook page, with special guests Blue Nudes. The gig will be 7-8.30pm and will feature some songs from the upcoming album, as well as some other songs including a few requests.
Click the buttons below to stream/download Bold Fisherman now!
On Friday 24th April I’ll be releasing Bold Fisherman, a digital-only single, as well as a live video of the song. I’ll also be doing a live stream gig with support from Leeds-based “sad boi folk” duo Blue Nudes.
The track is a traditional song taken from my upcoming eponymous album (released on 26th June), and was recorded by Ben Walker at his studio in Brighton. Like most of the album, it’s just me singing live in the studio with my guitar.
The video for Bold Fisherman will be premiered on Folk Radio on Friday 24th April. It’s a live version of the song, beautifully shot and recorded by Maria Alzamora (video) and Lewis Harris (audio).
The single launch gig starts at 7pm on the 24th and will be streamed live from my Facebook page, as well as via my Instagram and Blue Nudes‘ Instagram. Feel free to let me know any requests via email or social media! (Some ABBA has already been requested).
Bold Fisherman will be available to stream/download from the usual places, including Spotify. Sign up to my mailing list to download the track for free now, or head to my bandcamp on the release day to get it for free/pay as you feel.
